[석운창의 영어뉴스 듣기] 제2강세와 강세의 이동

다음절어는 주강세에 더해서 부강세(제2강세)를 갖는 것이 일반적이다. 이때 이 두가지 강세를 구분하여 제2강세는 약간 약하게 말한다고 가르친다. 하지만 실제 영미인들은 이 두가지 강세를 구분하지 않는다. 실제 구분하는 것이 불가능한 일이라고 할 수 있다.

강세는 항상 리듬단위를 만들며 따라서 제2강세를 가진 다음절어는 2개의 리듬단위로 말하게 된다. 예를 들어 *conti*nental은 두개의 리듬단위로 말하고 *inter*conti*nental은 세개의 리듬단위로 말한다.

빠른 말투에서는 강세가 생략될 수 있고 두개의 강세 (부강세+주강세)를 갖는 많은 단어들에서 뒤의 강세는 생략되고 앞의 강세가 주강세가 되는 경우가 흔히 있다. 예를 들어 *fourteen *boys처럼 말하는 것이다.

영어의 리듬은 강세가 시간적으로 규칙적으로 나타나는 것을 말하고 두개의 강세가 너무 간격없이 붙어 있으면 리듬을 말하기 어렵기 때문이다. 다음의 단어들도 문장 속에서는 첫음절에 강세를 주어 말할 수 있다.

And he praised the U.S. relationship with Germany, but only after a day of diplomatic drama that now has some critics concerned about how the rest of the trip will go.
